I survived the judges at Barstool Sports
On June 5th Rob Rodney founder Mark Frahm participated in a Shark Tank style program run by Barstool Sports, called The Big Brain. It was exhilarating. It was terrifying. It took all, dang, day. He shares how it all went down.
8:30 am: I wake up in my New York City hotel room. In my world, run by toddler boys, 8:30 is “sleeping in”. It’s late, it’s quiet, it’s glorious. Then I realize I’m on East Coast time. So, it’s 5:30. Where’s my coffee?
8:31 am: I remember why I’m here. Fear sinks in. I’m presenting Rob Rodney today. On air. In front of celebrity judges. Did I really need that final bourbon last night?
(Sidenote, yes, I did. I met Buddy Guy’s drummer at the hotel bar and it pretty much made my decade.)
9:30 am: I meet with my brother-in-law and wingman, Ari, to go through my pitch. I’ve been in sales my whole career and Ari has heard about a million pitches, but somehow this one feels more terrifying.
11:00 am: The fear really sets in. I mean, El Pres is BarStool’s founder – and he’s about to rip me apart like a pack of Ramsay Bolton’s dogs (Note to self, must re-watch that episode of Game of Thrones).
11:13 am: I mean, it’s just an on-screen interview. Who cares if I miss it? Do they really need me there? How much is a Southwest flight change fee?
12:00 pm: Ari shoves me into the Uber like a frustrated pet owner, trying to squeeze his Egyptian Mau into an undersized pet carrier.
12:18 pm: We arrive, and are greeted by friendly Barstool staff, wearing the cool grins of people who aren’t going on tv today. They take us to the Green Room. That’s right people, Green Rooms are real. And they’re awesome.
1:30 pm: My call time is 2 pm. I should be reviewing my pitch. But there are 40 hyped-up contestants in this room and the vibe is electric.
2:00 pm: It’s GO time. Just kidding. It’s not GO time. They’re not ready for me. So instead I watch hordes of my new friends file in and out of the firing squad undeterred.
3:00 pm: I wait.
4:00 pm: I wait.
5:00 pm: I wait. (And eat an oversized packed of peanut M&M’s because…why not?)
6:00 pm: I wait.
7:00 pm: I wait.
7:15 pm: I wait…just kidding – they finally call me in there. They tell me to count down from ten, then walk through the studio door. How did I do, you ask? Take a look below, and let me know (segment starts at 11:46):
